A Little About Elder-Beerman

Founded in 1883, Elder-Beerman is seen as a Midwestern mall staple with 83 stores across eight U.S. states. Its original name was the Elder & Johnston Company. Arthur Beerman worked at Elder & Johnston early on and then formed his own corporation, Beerman Stores, in 1945. After years of rivalry with another department store called Rikes, Beerman acquired Elder & Johnston, which gave him access to a wider area within Ohio. By 1962, the combined companies were known as Elder-Beerman and, over the next several years, expanded to include furniture, home lines and an increasing number of stores across the Midwest. It did file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1995, but managed to turn itself around and is currently owned by The Bon-Ton, which also owns other widely recognized retailers like Bergner's and the Boston Store.
